Merchan has been an acting justice on the New York State Supreme Court since 2009. He was seen arriving at the Manhattan criminal courthouse in grey sweatpants, a baseball cap, and a blue coat hours before the grand jury voted to indict Trump.

Allen Weisselberg, who used to be the chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, was tried by Merchan. He pleaded guilty to 15 counts and testified against his former employer. Weisselberg was given a jail sentence of five months.
With the indictment, Donald Trump is the first president of the United States to be charged with a crime. Merchan’s lawyer, Susan Necheles, told AFP in an email, “We do expect the arraignment to occur on Tuesday,”

Merchan has been a judge for 16 years. He started out as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. In 2006, he was put on the bench of the Bronx Family Court. Before that, he had worked in the office of the State Attorney General.

In 2012, he was in charge of the case of a woman called the “soccer mum madam.” She was accused of running a call girl ring for wealthy people on the Upper East Side.
Merchan’s LinkedIn page says that he got a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing Management from Baruch College in 1990. Then, he went to Hofstra University School of Law and got a degree in law.
