For the unversed, earlier reports surfaced online suggesting the tragic news of Juan Izquierdo’s passing. The Uruguayan footballer, who left us for his heavenly abode at the age of 27, died five days after collapsing during a match.

On Thursday, age 27 Juan Izquierdo, who was playing in a Copa Libertadores match in Sao Paulo, suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest and rushed to Hospital Albert Einstein. Five days after his admission in the hospital, his club, Nacional took to X and announced the tragic news of his demise.

A statement of the club reads, “It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo.”

What Did the Report Reveal?

Reportedly, the defender died on Tuesday at Hospital Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, where he was being treated for “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.”

Following his passing, the medical staff of the hospital reported that Izquierdo remained under neurological critical care and on a ventilator, following earlier updates that he had experienced “a progression of his brain damage and an increase of intracranial pressure.”

About Juan Izquierdo

Born on July 4, 1997, in Montevideo, Juan Manuel Izquierdo Viana was a defender who made 111 appearances in the Uruguayan Primera División, while playing for numerous famous clubs including Cerro, Peñarol, Montevideo Wanderers, Liverpool, and Nacional.

In 2022, he won league titles with Liverpool and in 2023 with Nacional. He also had a brief stint in Mexico’s Liga MX with Atlético San Luis in 2021.

Izquierdo began his professional career with Cerro, making his debut on February 20, 2018, in a Copa Sudamericana match against Sport Rosario of Peru.

Five days later, he made his Uruguayan Primera División debut. In February 2019, he transferred to Peñarol and later moved to Montevideo Wanderers, where he scored his only goals for the club in a 3–2 victory against Liverpool.
