Police stated “The suspect has been identified as Joseph Jones, who is 32 years old as of 2023 and hails from suburban Omaha,” Omaha police stated this in a press release on 1st of February, 2023. They released photos in which Jones can be seen holding the rifle inside the Target store.
Who was Joseph Jones?
32 year old Joseph Jones purchased the AR-15 rifle four days prior to the Target shooting incident. On the 31st of January, cops responded to the scene after they received the news of an active shooter in the store. The responding officers confronted Jones before shooting him and later on he was pronounced dead at the crime scene.
“The first arriving officers went into the building, confronted the suspect, and shot him dead,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer stated during a press conference which was kept for briefing after the incident.
Preliminary reports suggested that Joseph Jones had entered the target store with the rifle and then he fired “multiple rounds.” No victims were found inside the store at that time.
Police had initially stated that the suspect was a white male who was estimated to be in his 30s.
Larry Derksen Jr., who is the uncle of the gunman, told KETV that his nephew was troubled. ‘His family had repeatedly called law enforcement after they found guns in his Gretna-area home. I agonize over what I could have done differently. I have to call the cops, it has disarmed him. I have called mental facilities. I begged people. And Joey was not rational,” Derksen said in an interview with KETV NewsWatch 7.
The cops are carrying out an investigation into this shooting case and the officer who shot Jones is given administrative leave for a few days.
