Here is all you need to know about Jose Molina, the former football player and new ISL Mohun Bagan Super Giant head coach 

Mohun Bagan Super Giant have announced Jose Francisco Molina as their new head coach for the upcoming season after replacing Antonio Lopez Habas.

The newly hired coach was “honoured to be part of Mohun Bagan Super Giant, a club with rich legacy,” he said in a statement following his arrival.

Who is Jose Molina? 

Jose Francisco Molina Jimenez is a former Spanish football player and manager who was born on August 8, 1970 in Valencia, Spain. The former goalkeeper who is currently 53 years old stands 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) tall.

Molina has experienced success in the ISL ever since he led Atletico de Kolkata to a championship victory in the league’s third edition. In the 2017–18 campaign, he managed the Atletico San Luis squad from Mexico.

The 53-year-old Spaniard has a wealth of experience to his present role having coached several Spanish clubs. His most recent position was Technical Director of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which he held until Spain withdrew from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

Throughout his career, he has held managerial spells with Villarreal in La Liga in addition to roles with Getafe B, Villarreal B and C, San Luis Club, and various other teams.

Molina kicked off his coaching career as the manager of Villarreal’s C team before going on to manage the team’s B team. 

In his only season for the ISL, he led ATK win their second league championship since taking over the franchise in 2016.

This accomplishment improved his reputation in Indian football and demonstrated his versatility and productivity as a manager. 

As a player, throughout his four years, Molina played for Spain in two European Championships and the 1998 World Cup. 

He was a player for Atletico Madrid and Deportivo de La Coruna for eleven of his long professional career where he bagged five trophies between the two teams. He played in 415 La Liga games over 14 seasons.

Molina is renowned for his possession-based style of play, which places a strong focus on midfield control and dominance. He likes his sides to control play and have a high ball retention percentage. 

Molina’s central midfielders are crucial to his system, which often favors a 4-2-3-1 formation.
