Though it seemed inconceivable a few months ago, Spain may end up with Vilda holding the trophy. Spain faces England on Sunday having reached their first final amid a background of turbulence and disunity.
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) revealed in a statement that 15 players had sent similar emails noting that they would not play for Vilda unless “significant” concerns over their “emotional state” and “health” were dealt with on September 22, two months after a 2-1 quarterfinal defeat by eventual winners England at Euro 2022.
Rumours of concerns about the team’s training practises and inadequate game preparation led to tension, despite the “Las 15” players’ denials of the claims that they had wanted Vilda sacked.
Prior to their triumphs in Australia and New Zealand, Spain had never even won a World Cup knockout game. As his side might hold a World Cup trophy soon, let us have a look at who is Jorge Vilda.

Who is Jorge Vilda?
Born on July 7, 1981, Jorge Vilda Rodrguez is a Spanish football coach with a UEFA Pro Licence. Since 2015, he has served as the women’s national team of Spain’s head coach. Vilda is the women’s national team program’s sporting director for the Spanish FA (RFEF) as well as a tactical intructure at the National Coaching School.
Before an injury forced him into coaching, Vilda was a young, gifted player. He joined the national women’s youth football teams, where he was trusted to guide the group of players they thought would be the best in Spain in the future.
Before succeeding his father, Angel Vilda, as head coach of the U19 squad, he served as the coach of the under-17 women’s team. He received a promotion to head the senior side in 2015.
Spain was in a bad place after placing last in their World Cup 2015 group without a win. In addition to failing to advance past the quarterfinals of the European Championship twice while Vilda was in charge, Spain was eliminated in the round of 16 in the 2019 World Cup by eventual champions the United States.
Who is Jorge Vilda’s wife?
Vilda is wed to his wife Mara, with whom he allegedly has two kids.
Vilda’s father, Ángel Vilda, is highly influential in Spanish soccer and while his influence on Jorge’s career has never been confirmed, local media reports speculate that nepotism played a role in his ascent. (Ángel has denied helping his son)
