Who is Jolly Joseph?
Jolly Joseph, a 47-year-old Kerala native, is notorious for being the prime suspect in the murder of the six members of the family she married into. She has been in the news because the recently released documentary “Curry and Cyanide” shed light on her life.
She is a first-year college dropout from Kattappana, in the Idukki district. She married twice. First, she married Roy Thomas in 1997. Together, they have two boys, aged 19 and 24. However, her spouse, Roy Thomas, passed away in 2011 under suspicious circumstances. Later, Jolly married Shaju Zachariah.
Jolly Joseph, according to her neighbor, had lied to other locals about holding an M.Com. degree and a position at the esteemed National Institute of Technology Calicut. But her actual whereabouts during her daily forays into her “job” are still a mystery.
However, people who knew her have characterized her as “jovial, friendly, jolly, and pious.”
Why did she kill her own family?
The horrific murderous rampage of Jolly Joseph’s family was brought about by a series of planned incidents motivated by deceit and greed. The first incident was the poisoning of her mother-in-law, Annamma Thomas, as a result of increasing pressure to find employment or continue her education.
In 2008, Jolly’s father-in-law, Tom Thomas, became her next victim due to her desire for property. She took advantage of the situation to take ownership of his large land holdings.
A number of fatalities that followed, including the 2011 death of her husband, Roy Thomas, and other suspicious deaths, were covered up as apparent suicides or natural causes. As suspicions grew, Jolly kept up her lethal trail, taking down anybody who dared to question her activities.
After a confession and the exhumation of her remains, her arrest in 2019 exposed the horrifying truth behind the apparent natural deaths. Jolly and her accomplice, Mathew, await trial for these heinous crimes, shedding light on a tale of greed, manipulation, and devastating loss within one family.
