Chief Pelletier provided insights into the continuing search and recovery efforts on a gloomy Saturday, August 12. He revealed that just 3% of the vast search area had been thoroughly searched by government cadaver dogs.
The unfortunate death toll currently stands at 96, and Chief Pelletier stated that this figure would probably increase when the actual scope of the wildfire’s spread became evident. He added,
We’ve got an area that we have to contain that is at least 5 square miles, and it is full of our loved ones.

Who is John Pelletier?
John Pelletier is a popular Hawaiian police officer. He has been in the news because he has been praised for his heroic efforts during the disastrous wildfire on Hawaii’s Maui Island.
He was born in Buffalo, New York, and is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States. He attended the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he graduated. Later, he also attended the FBI National Academy, where he got training to become a police officer.
In December 2021, John Pelletier took over as Chief of Police for the Maui Police Department. He is in charge of maintaining the safety of 3 million tourists and 165,000 county residents in Maui. Prior to that, from January 2020 to December 2021, he worked as a police captain for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he concentrated on serious offenders and drugs.
