Melissa Hortman, 55, had been a towering presence in Minnesota politics for nearly two decades. A trained attorney and seasoned legislator, she represented a strong Democratic district and served as Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2019 to 2025. Known for her sharp negotiating skills, pragmatic leadership, and tireless commitment to her party, she often secured reelection by overwhelming margins.
During her tenure, she played a key role in ushering through landmark legislation. Notably, she helped pass bills in 2023 that expanded abortion rights, legalized recreational marijuana, and introduced mandatory paid family and medical leave for Minnesota workers. Her influence was especially felt during a period of slim Democratic control in the Legislature.

Earlier this year, amidst a tied House where both parties held 66 seats, Hortman led Democrats in a strategic boycott during the opening weeks of the legislative session. The standoff arose from disputed Democratic victories, which temporarily cast uncertainty over who would lead the chamber. Once the dust settled, Hortman made the rare move of conceding the Speaker’s gavel to Republican Representative Lisa Demuth, underscoring her dedication to institutional stability over partisan power.
Senator John A. Hoffman, 60, who remains hospitalized in stable condition following surgery, has served in the Minnesota Senate since 2013. A former school board member, he earned a reputation as a grounded policymaker with deep ties to his community. The targeted nature of the attacks and the suspect’s impersonation of a law enforcement officer have raised alarm across the country. As tributes pour in for Representative Hortman and her years of dedicated service, state and federal authorities continue their urgent search for the assailant.
John is a Minnesota State Senator representing District 36, which includes parts of Anoka and Hennepin counties, namely Brooklyn Park, Champlin, and Coon Rapids. A member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, he has served in the Minnesota Senate since 2013 and before his tenure in the Senate, Hoffman was elected to the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, where he served as Vice Chair.
He has served as a board member and chair of the Midway Chamber of Commerce and in the Senate, Hoffman currently serves as Chair of the Human Services Committee. He is also a member of other committees, including the Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate Committee; the Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee; and the Health and Human Services Committee.
