Joel Cauchi who was a resident of Sydney was shot dead by police after he stabbed and injured people.
Witnesses saw Joel Cauchi wearing shorts and an Australian rugby jersey as he ran through the Westfield Bondi Junction mall while attacking people with a knife for no reason. During a press conference, Anthony Cooke, a representative from the New South Wales Police revealed that in the aftermath of the attack, efforts were made by both shoppers and staff at the mall to intervene and stop the perpetrator.

Police disclosed that Toowoomba’s Joel Cauchi, aged 40, had been diagnosed with a mental illness when he was 17, believed to be schizophrenia but his health declined in recent years, and he had been sleeping in a car.
He had an interest in guns, frequented strip clubs and made attempts to meet people in the weeks and months leading up to Saturday’s stabbing in which he killed six people.
Cauchi grew up in Toowoomba where he studied at the University of Southern Queensland and worked as an English tutor online.
He was a member of the Toowoomba Car Club and Toowoomba Arts Society and later lived in Brisbane, in Kangaroo Point and Carina before returning to his family’s home in Toowoomba. While his religion hasn’t been revealed yet, it’s possible that Joel could be Catholic due to his name’s Maltese origin.

Some individuals sought refuge by hiding in closed shops for safety. Cooke also mentioned that authorities had been in contact with Cauchi’s family following the incident. Cauchi, who resided in Queensland, had previously drawn the attention of law enforcement too . He had rented a storage unit in Sydney recently.
Police searched this unit but didn’t find significant evidence suggesting he was planning an attack, according to a report by Reuters news agency. The police mentioned that the 40-year-old had struggled with mental health problems before, and they didn’t find any signs that his actions were driven by a particular ideology. On his Facebook page, Cauchi indicated that he worked as an English tutor for an online school.
Six days before the attack, Cauchi asked for surfing buddies on social media at Bondi Beach. Australian media mentioned that he regularly reached out in hobby groups on Facebook seeking companionship or advice on hobbies like astrophotography over the years.

In December 2020, Cauchi posted on an outdoor adventures page asking if anyone would join him for a shooting session. In a post, Cauchi asked for groups of people who shoot guns, including handguns, to hang out with and get to know in Brisbane. Now, the post is getting a lot of comments.
