In October 2019, Haydon had the opportunity to meet Anthony Albanese while he was speaking at a business dinner in Melbourne. They lived close to one another in Sydney’s Inner West and were both supporters of the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team.

After he introduced himself, they soon found they had a lot in common, including the fact that they lived in the same Marrickville neighbourhood.
The Labor leader later introduced himself and discovered Haydon was in his electorate and they then met for a drink in Sydney, with Albanese later recalling that moment during their first interview together. “We had what I thought would just be a drink at Young Henrys in Newtown, and we got on really well. That’s how it started.”
