Rachael Blackmore, who was raised on a dairy farm in Killenaule, County Tipperary, Ireland, the daughter of a farmer and a teacher, began riding horses at the age of two. She participated in hunting, eventing, pony racing, and pony club meetings as a child. While riding and competing as an amateur jockey, she earned a degree in equine science from the University of Limerick.
She is dating fellow jockey Brian Hayes who was raised in Rosscarberry, County Cork, Ireland, after being born there in July 1988.

Irish racer Rachael Blackmore used to compete in the National Hunt. In the 182-year history of the Grand National, she became the first female jockey to win the race in 2021. With six wins, including the Champion Hurdle in 2021, she also became the first female jockey to hold the top spot at the Cheltenham Festival. She became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year. After winning 575 races as a professional jockey, she declared her immediate retirement on May 12, 2025.

The first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Blackmore rode favorite A Plus Tard to a 15-length triumph at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival after winning the Champion Hurdle again on Honeysuckle. Blackmore declared her immediate retirement from professional racing on May 12, 2025.
She said as she announced her retirement on social media, “My days of being a jockey have come to an end. I feel the time is right. I’m sad but I’m also incredibly grateful for what my life has been for the past 16 years. I just feel so lucky to have been legged up on the horses I have, and to have experienced success I never even dreamt could be possible.”
