Who is Paul Townend?

Paul Townend is a rider with the National Hunt who was born in Ireland on September 15, 1990. He is from Lisgoold in County Cork and primarily rides for Irish trainer Willie Mullins’ stable. The 33 year old has a height of 5 feet 8 inches.

Paul Townend, originally from Midleton in County Cork, began his career as an apprentice on the Flat for Willie Mullins, and the two have been friends with the County Carlow trainer since then.

Townend has worked with Mullins since he began his career as an apprentice flat racing rider. July 2008 saw Townend’s first victory in a jump competition. His mount, Indian Pace, was the winner of the Galway Hurdle.

In the 2010–11 season, Townend, then 20 years old, captured the Irish jump racing title for the first time. The rider is a six-time Irish Jump Racing Champion bagging the titles in 2010–11, 2018–19, 2019–20, 2020–21, 2021–22, and 2022–23.

The rider helped Willie Mullins win the Cheltenham Gold Cup for the first time in 2019 with Al Boum Photo, and he later repeated it again in 2020. In 2023 and 2024, he achieved his third and fourth victories in the race on Galopin Des Champs.

In 2020, Paul Townend topped the Cheltenham Festival jockey rankings for the first time. Among his five victories was the repeat Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Al Boum Photo. Townend rose to prominence as the Mullins yard’s top jockey after Ruby Walsh retired.

Sadly, Paul Townend’s mother Josephine passed away of cancer when he was just 15. His father’s name is Tim Townend.
