An MRI scan revealed an unstable cervical fracture causing damage to the spinal cord and blood vessels in the mid-cervical region. Lee’s sedation has decreased, although he is still in critical care at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle. Nevertheless, it is unclear how much further he will recover in the long run.
The incident occurred while riding Ben Macdui in a 5f handicap, where the horse stumbled, catapulting Lee over its front, resulting in an awkward landing on his head. Who is Graham Lee?
Graham Lee is a renowned Irish jockey. He has been in the news because he recently had a serious injury to his spinal cord following a fall at Newcastle on Friday.
He was born on 16 December 1975 in Galway, Republic of Ireland. He hails from a sports family: his brother Malcolm Lee was a flat jockey, his cousin Dean Mernagh is a flat jockey, and his grandpa Matthew Lee was a player for Kilmarnock FC and a national team cap holder.
He is married, and has two children but the name of his family members isn’t known. Graham and his family are currently residing in Bedale, North Yorkshire. He is currently 47 years old.
His career
Graham Lee’s remarkable career included a historic victory on top of Amberleigh House in the 2004 Grand National.
Recognized for his versatility and aptitude, Lee established prosperous alliances with well-known equines, chief among them the staying hurdler Inglis Drever, with whom he won seven races, the most notable of which was the 2005 World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
In 2012, Lee demonstrated strategic astuteness by switching to flat racing in response to obstacles in the jump racing world. Highlights of his flat racing career include Group One triumphs with Alpha Delphini in the 2018 Nunthorpe Stakes and Trip to Paris in the 2015 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
