The Reason Behind Joasia Zakrzewski’s Disqualification
On April 7, 2023, Zakrzewski took part in the 50-mile GB Ultras 2023 Manchester to Liverpool race. When it was discovered that she had completed a portion of the race in a car, she was disqualified.
She had travelled a mile in just one minute and forty seconds, according to GPX mapping data. The estimated distance she travelled in the car was 2.5 miles.
Adrian Scott, a fellow runner, heard her apologise for what had transpired. He said, “The race didn’t go as planned. She said that she wanted to withdraw from the marathon as she was ill and exhausted.”
Zakrzewski has given the race organisers’ investigations her full cooperation and a detailed account of what transpired.
Joasia Zakrzewski’s Explanation For Disqualification
On April 19, 2023, Zakrzewski apologised profusely to the BBC for her actions.
Upon arriving at the checkpoint, she said, “I told them I was pulling out and that I had been in the car, and they said, “You will hate yourself if you stop.” I committed to continuing in a non-competitive manner.”
She continued by saying that she made sure she didn’t pass the runner ahead when she saw her because she didn’t want to get in the way of her race.
Joasia Zakrzewski received a trophy and a medal for finishing in third place. She proudly posed for photos with the other runners after the race.
This was incorrect, and Zakrzewski acknowledged it by adding, “I made a huge mistake taking the award and should have handed it back. I felt nauseous, exhausted, and jet-lagged. I hold up my hands and admit that I should have returned them and declined to have photos taken since I was feeling ill, disoriented, and unable to think straight.”
Third place was eventually awarded to English runner Mel Sykes, who voiced her displeasure at Zarzewski’s actions on Twitter.
