JM Joshi is married to Vidya while his son Sachiin is married to actress Urvashi Sharma with them having a son and daughter.

The income tax (I-T) department said that unaccounted transactions of around ₹1,500 crore have been found in their six-day-long major search operation carried out at various premises linked to gutkha baron JM Joshi and his son, actor Sachiin Joshi, who is presently under arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case

During the search operation, ₹13 lakh and jewellery worth around ₹7 crore was seized and has been put under prohibitory orders and the I-T searches and survey operations started in Mumbai on February 8, 2021.

The JMJ Group, of which Joshi is the chairman, is engaged in manufacturing of gutkha, pan masala and related products, and also has a presence in the hospitality sector.

The I-T department in a statement issued said the search and seizure actions have led to the detection of foreign assets lying with a company registered in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), with an office in Dubai and the company is allegedly controlled and managed by Joshi.

“The net worth of the BVI company is ₹830 crore, which was created by siphoning funds from India. These funds have been round-tripped to India in the form of share premiums amounting to ₹638 crore in the flagship companies of the group,” a statement released by Surbhi Ahluwalia, public relation officer, I-T department.

The I-T probe also revealed that the group availed bogus deduction under section 80IC of the Income Tax Act, 1961, to the extent of ₹398 crore and tax officials also discovered that unaccounted production of pan masala worth ₹247 crore at two factory premises of the group.

This crime was for setting up gutka manufacturing units all across Karachi for fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees. Special Judge B D Shelke found this trio guilty of offenses under the Indian Penal Code and the stringent Maharashtra Control of the Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). They were further fined around Rs 15 lakh each under the charge of MCOCA.

The judge stated, “compensation amount is to be paid once the appeal period gets over. The rest of the fine amount is credited to the government,”

Pradip Gharat who is a special public prosecutor for the CBI, examined almost 38 witnesses among which was a close relative of Dawood. Deposing before the court in 2019, the relative stated the terror accused had lashed out at Dawood’s brother Anees on learning the latter had involved a family member.

During the pendency of the case, another gutka baron accused, Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal who was around 80 years died in year 2017. One more businessman who co-accused was Rajesh Pancharia and he was discharged in 2018. On Monday, the court announced that said investigating officer is to file separate charge sheets against those wanted, including Dawood. Earlier.

Ansari went off to Karachi where Dawood acted as a mediator between the 2 gutka barons including JM Joshi and later they settled the issue. He further alleged Dhariwal was asked to pay Rs 11 crore to Joshi. He stated, ‘after the settlement, Joshi has arranged to set up a gutka plant for the Anees base in Karachi and supplied machinery and also the manpower for the same.’

In 2018, the court stated,’ while framing charges against Joshi (67) and Ansari (54), had said the duo, alongside Dhariwal, Mansuri and absconding accused Dawood, Anees, Abdul Antulay and Salim Shaikh were part of the conspiracy.’
