Jesse Matsch, full name Jesse Alan Marsch, was born on November 8, 1973, in Racine, Wisconsin, United States. Before becoming a professional, Marsch played college soccer for Princeton University.
While playing in college, Marsch scored 16 goals as a midfielder and forward and was even named All-American in 1995. Later in 1996, Marsch was drafted in the third round of the MLS by D.C. United, but he played only 15 games. He then joined Chicago Fire, led by his former coach Bob Bradley.

Jesse Marsch had a 14-season playing career, where he played as a midfielder in the Major League Soccer (MLS). He played for three different clubs during those years – D.C. United, Chicago Fire, and Chivas USA. During his playing career, Marsch became a regular starter in the Fire lineup.
He helped them win the 1998 MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup in 1998, 2000, and 2003. Marsch later joined Chivas USA before retiring in 2010 to start a coaching career. During his career, Marsch earned two caps with the USMNT and later got hired as assistant coach by Bob Bradley.
Coaching career
Jesse Marsch began his coaching career as the assistant coach of the United States men’s national team. After the previous coach Bradley got fired, Marsch got appointed as the new coach for Montreal Impact, in 2012.
Marsch then became the head coach of the New York Red Bulls. He led the Red Bulls to the MLS Supporters’ Shield and even won the MLS Coach of the Year award during his first season at the club.
Marsch later got hired as an assistant coach for RB Leipzig in 2018, before becoming their head coach in 2021. He led the team to win the double and later got appointed as the head coach for Leeds United and in 2022. Despite helping Leeds avoid relegation, Marsch was just recently sacked on February 6, 2023, with the club currently trailing in 17th on the points table.
