In her statement, Coco Yoshizawa expressed, “I knew that if I wanted to win, I had to attempt the most challenging tricks. I didn’t aim for second or third place, I aimed for the top spot with my highest difficulty moves.”
She furthermore revealed that despite her rivals having one more run, she went for raising her board above her head, taking the risk with her successful trick, the young girl secured a gold medal.

Additionally, she revealed how relieved she felt compared to being happy after landing, as she emphasized, “After landing it, I felt more relieved than happy. Completing the big spin flip felt fantastic because I hadn’t managed it in practice, so nailing it here meant a lot.”

For the curious, Coco Yoshizawa, born on September 22, 2009, in Kanagawa, Japan, is a Japanese skateboarder. She qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics and had the highest score in the preliminary round of the women’s street event, eventually winning the gold medal.
Fellow Japanese skater Liz Akama took silver, while Brazilian Rayssa Leal claimed bronze at the Place de La Concorde.
After heavy rain forced the postponement of the men’s event the previous day, the skies cleared on Sunday, transforming the temporary arena into a humid cauldron.

The women’s street final began with the evening sun reflecting off the golden point of the ancient Luxor obelisk at the center of the Place de La Concorde and glinting off the glass dome of the Grand Palais.
Yoshizawa, part of a new generation of Japanese skaters, scored 272.75 points from her three best runs.
Following her older brother, Yoshizawa who is in the ninth grade started skateboarding at the age of 7.

Akama, aged 15, collected 265.95 points for second place, while Leal finished with 253.37 points, comfortably ahead of fourth-placed Cui Chenxi of China.
At 16, Leal was the oldest of the three medalists in the French capital. Momiji Nishiya, who won the first-ever gold in the event in Tokyo at age 13, did not make the team this time.
In another update, Skateboarding will resume on Monday with the men’s street event, postponed due to Saturday’s heavy rain. With defending Olympic champion Yuto Horigome, Sora Shirai, and 14-year-old Ginwoo Onodera, Japan could once again dominate.
