In January 2021, Thomas Merriman’s body was discovered at Solana Beach, California, a house he shared with his stepdaughter Jade Janks. This week in Vista Superior Court, the murder trial for interior designer Janks, 39, who also co-founded the non-profit organisation Butterfly Farms, began.
She has entered a not-guilty plea to the charge of killing 64-year-old Merriman. He was allegedly given an excessive amount of sleeping medication by Janks after she learned of the pictures, one of which he allegedly used as his screensaver.
Who is Jade Janks?
Steve Janks, Janks’ biological father, lives in Southern California and is a native of South Africa. She is the proprietor of the recently created interior design business Jank Janks Interiors.
On the business website, she writes, “Your home is a reflection of you, and Jade can help you express your particular style through a process straightforward and fun! According to a bio, “You can trust Jade to hold your hand and make your project a joyful one!” Janks also asserts that she started her interior design profession while working for her father’s kitchen design company.
The Case In The Court
The San Diego Union-Tribune quotes Jorge Del Portillo, Deputy District Attorney for San Diego County, as saying “This was no accident.” The killing was planned. Authorities claimed that Janks and her lover took the pictures more than ten years ago, consensually. We don’t know how Merriman got his hands on them.
“When Janks was cleaning her stepfather’s hospitalised apartment,” Del Portillo added, “she discovered the pictures.” Prosecutors claimed that she texted another man about providing Merriman with the pills. “I just dosed him completely.” Del Portillo claims that Janks contacted her on the day she picked up Merriman from the hospital, saying, “Stopping for whiskey than at Dixieland to stall. LMK.” In another text message released by the prosecutors, Janks seemed to doubt her strategy.
