Official statements
The midfielder’s representative stated this evening: “Jack Diamond vehemently refutes the accusations levelled against him. Jack anticipates defending himself in court.”
Earlier, a representative for the Northumbria Police stated: “We learned that a woman had been sexually assaulted inside a residence in the Washington region in May of last year. An inquiry was started right away, and a suspect was later taken into custody. Jack Diamond, 23, of Fatfield, Washington, is scheduled to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in May on charges of one offence of rape and one count of sexual assault.”
Following the filing of those allegations, Diamond’s loan to League One Lincoln City, where he had been playing since August, was cancelled, and Sunderland stated that Diamond had been suspended immediately. In a statement, Sunderland said: “Sunderland AFC has been informed that Jack Diamond has been charged with a crime by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Lincoln sent the following statement on their website: “With immediate effect, Jack Diamond’s loan assignment to City has been cancelled. At this moment, the club is unable to issue any additional statements.”
On May 5, Diamond will show up in court.
In August, Diamond had two appearances for Sunderland, beginning the team’s Carabao Cup loss at Sheffield Wednesday and then entering as a substitute in a Championship game against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Diamond was a member of the team during the preseason. In 36 games for Mark Kennedy’s team after joining Lincoln at the end of August, he scored eight goals. On May 5, Diamond will show up in court.
His most recent appearance for Lincoln was as a substitute in the 2-1 loss at Fleetwood on Saturday.
