In 2008, Frederic Bourdin told The New Yorker that the idea to become Barclay came to him in a flash of emergency. To hide this, Bourdin made up a story that he was a victim of a kid s*x ring and that his captors gave him drugs to change his appearance.

Carey Gibson, who was 31 at the time and related to Barclay, and the San Antonio Police Office helped him get to Barclays quickly. After Nicholas Patrick Barclay went missing, his mom Beverly, who was struggling with her illegal drug use at the time, split up and became hooked on methadone.

So when Bourdin showed up as Nicholas, she didn’t think twice about inviting him.

Frederic Bourdin was born on June 13, 1974, in the suburb of Nanterre, which is near Paris. At age 5, he moved in with his grandparents in Mouchamps, which is near Nantes. Bourdin was born out of wedlock and had half-Algerian ancestry. This shocked the officials.

Eric Maurel, who is now the public examiner of Nimes, told David Grann of The New Yorker in 2008 that they didn’t understand how Bourdin thought up his scam.

He went to a places, like Spain, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Slovakia, France, Switzerland, Britain, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Bosnia, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, and America.

When Bourdin married a French woman named Isabella in 2007, he stopped playing the certainty game. The couple went on to have five children. But a decade later, in 2017, he wrote on Facebook that Isabella had left with their children.
