Ali Hosseini Khamenei, widely known as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, emerged as one of Iran’s most influential political and religious figures. Born on 19 April 1939 in Mashhad, his early years were shaped by modest circumstances in a religious household. His father, Seyed Javad Khamenei, was an Islamic scholar, and his mother, Khadijeh Mirdamadi, played a significant role in his upbringing.

Ali Khamenei’s father had three daughters with his first wife, all of whom are dead now and his remaining children are from his second wife Khadijeh Mirdamadi.

Growing up in a 65-square-meter house, Hosseini was introduced to revolutionary ideals at the age of 13 after meeting Sayyid Mojtaba Navab Safavi. His education took place in seminaries across Mashhad, Qom, and Najaf, and he followed the Twelver Shi’a tradition. By the late 1950s, his political consciousness intensified. After a brief study in Najaf, he returned to Mashhad due to concerns about his father’s deteriorating vision.

During the 1960s and 1970s, SAVAK repeatedly arrested him for opposing the Shah. He spent time in solitary confinement and later faced exile. Despite state suppression, he continued preaching and mobilizing support for the revolution. His active role during the 1979 Iranian Revolution helped shape the new Islamic Republic. In June 1981, he narrowly survived an assassination attempt that left permanent damage to his right arm.

Following this, he rose swiftly through the ranks — becoming president in October 1981 and serving until 1989. During his presidency, he worked closely with Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi and adopted a staunch anti-liberal, anti-American stance. In June 1989, the Assembly of Experts appointed him Supreme Leader after Ayatollah Khomeini’s death. Although some questioned his qualifications, constitutional amendments and political backing solidified his position.

By the mid-1990s, religious bodies like the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom declared him a marja. Throughout his leadership, he issued several significant fatwas. He prohibited nuclear weapons while endorsing peaceful nuclear energy, supported stem cell research, and allowed gamete donation in fertility treatments. He banned music education in public schools and restricted women from riding bicycles publicly.

His command extended to the armed forces and the Setad organization, which Western reports described as financially vast. Domestically, his regime faced frequent protests, including the 1999 student unrest, the Green Movement in 2009, and demonstrations after Mahsa Amini’s death in 2022. He maintained a hardline stance against the United States and Israel, and critics accused him of suppressing dissent, particularly among Baháʼís and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Born in 1939 in royalist Iran, Ali Khamenei grew up in the holy city of Mashhad, which hosts the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Twelver. Mansoureh Khojaste Bagherzadeh born in 1947 is the wife of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran and she was born in a Persian religious family in Mashhad.

Ali Khamenei is the Supreme Leader of Iran and a Shia Cleric and his personal fortune was estimated by Reuters in 2013 to be worth at least $95 billion based on the value of Setad alone with him said to be incharge of a large amount of assets in Iran.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was born in 1969 in Mashhad and pursued theology and has allegedly been chosen as his father’s successor as Iran’s Supreme Leader.
