As part of the campaign, all the captains wore rainbow-coloured armbands, and many players also opted to wear rainbow-themed laces.
Sam Morsy refuses to wear Premier League rainbow armband
Last weekend, all the Premier League fixtures were part of a campaign in partnership with LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall. The campaign was aimed at promoting equality and diversity in the game. As part of the ‘Rainbow Laces weekend’ campaign, players were encouraged to use a designated rainbow armband.
Amidst all this, Ipswich Town skipper Sam Morsy was the only player who refused to wear the armband. Morsy cited his religious beliefs as the reasons behind his refusal. Morsy is a Muslim and previously observed Ramadan during the season. Following the incident, Ipswich issued a statement in support of Morsy, stating:
We respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband, due to his religious beliefs. We will continue to grow an environment where all are valued and respected, both on and off the pitch.”

Samy Sayed Mekkay Saied Morsy is a professional footballer who was born on September 10, 1991, in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. He mainly plays as a defensive midfielder for Premier League club Ipswich Town and also serves as its captain. Despite being born in England, Sam plays for the Egypt national team.

According to reports, the visibility of LGBTQ+ causes is at a high, but the Premier League has reportedly slashed financial support for the charity. The Premier League reportedly halved the amount of annual funding with charity Stonewall. Adidas have also lowered their financial commitment in recent years.
