Investigations into the alleged r*pe and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College have been taken over by CBI officials Sampat Meena and Seema Pahuja amid widespread demonstrations and outrage.
The 25-person team looking into the alleged r*pe and murder of the female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month will be led by Sampat Meena, Additional Director at the CBI.

Sampat Meena, an IPS officer from Jharkhand who was hired in 1994, has a stellar record. She has overseen high-profile cases like the 2020 Hathras r*pe-murder and the 2017 Unnao r*pe case, where she was recognized for her meticulous investigation work.

Meena’s spouse Surendra Singh is an IAS official of the Jharkhand cadre from the 1993 batch.
Meena had been a joint director of the national agency until being elevated to the role of assistant director of CBI in August 2023. Her five-year appointment with the CBI started in September 2017, and she subsequently secured a two-year extension that would last until September 2024.
Meena has served as the Inspector General at The Bureau of Police Research & Development in New Delhi before to assuming the position of CBI joint director for the Lucknow zone.
Before her posting as CBI joint director, Lucknow zone, she was posted as IG in BPR&D in New Delhi where she worked towards issues of child trafficking.
She was the first woman IPS officer to be posted as SSP, Ranchi and has also worked in the Naxal-affected districts of Jharkhand. She was SP of Dhanbad, Ranchi, Deoghar, and Jamtara and received the President’s Medal in 2021 for distinguished service. Meena belongs to an IAS and IPS family in Rajasthan’s Sawaimadhopur district and father is a retired IPS while her husband Surendra Singh is a 1993 batch IAS office of the Jharkhand cadre.
She oversaw “Operation Muskaan,” a home ministry program run by the Union with the goal of finding and rehabilitating missing children. In Jharkhand, more than 700 children were saved and reunited with their families under her direction as the Inspector General of Organized Crime in the CID.
Officer Seema Pahuja, who was also a member of the Hathras investigating team, is joining Meena. Pahuja will be in charge of the case’s ground level investigation in Kolkata.
Pahuja, who was awarded the Police Medal and is currently employed by the CBI as an Additional Superintendent, has long been connected to the organization’s special crime squad.
Kolkata r*pe case
On August 9, the severely injured body of a thirty-one-year-old postgraduate physician was found in the lecture hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The doctor’s r*pe was verified by the autopsy. A community volunteer was then taken into custody by the Kolkata Police in relation to the matter.
