Parag Jain, a senior Indian Police Service officer from the 1989 Punjab cadre, is appointed as the next chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s external intelligence agency. His appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for improving the nation’s intelligence landscape. He is expected to assume charge on July 1, following the conclusion of incumbent Ravi Sinha’s tenure on June 30.

Currently, he is leading the Aviation Research Centre and has played a prominent role in several crucial intelligence operations. Among these, his unit was credited with a pivotal role during Operation Sindoor, where actionable intelligence was reportedly gathered on Pakistani military deployments and terror camps. During the volatile years of militancy in Punjab, Jain has served in districts such as Bathinda, Mansa, and Hoshiarpur, and later took on responsibilities as SSP of Chandigarh and DIG of Ludhiana but his birth place isn’t known.

His expertise also extended to India’s foreign intelligence activities, including sensitive postings in Jammu and Kashmir, especially during landmark moments like the abrogation of Article 370 and the Balakot operation.

Jain is known within the intelligence community for his quiet, methodical style and preference for staying away from the limelight keeping in guidelines with RAW officials with details about his wife, children and family members not known. While his DOB isn’t known either, he is aged between 55-65 years.

Over the past decade, Jain has held several overseas and domestic assignments including in Sri Lanka and Canada, apart from J&K and Punjab.

Jain’s deep operational experience, especially in conflict-prone areas like Jammu and Kashmir, positioned him well to steer the agency through evolving regional and international challenges. He had previously been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police in Punjab on January 1, 2021. Even as Parag Jain prepares to take charge from Ravi Sinha on Monday, India’s external intelligence framework faces urgent calls for overhaul, having fallen short during critical episodes in the Maldives and Bangladesh over the past two years.
