Earlier, on Thursday, August 15, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the appointment of a new Special Director General of the Jammu and Kashmir police as they named an Indian Police Service officer, Nalin Prabhat for the position.

For the curious, Nalin Prabhat will now succeed the current Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, RR Swain, who is set to retire on September 30, 2024, assuming the role of DGP thereafter.
What Did the Home Ministry Say?
In addition to appointing, Nalin Prabhat as the SDG of the Jammu and Kashmir, the Home Ministry also confirmed his transfer from the National Security Guard (NSG) to the AGMUT cadre with immediate effect.
A statement of the Ministry of Home Affairs reads, “Upon joining the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) Cadre on inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh Cadre, Sh. Nalin Prabhat, IPS (AP:1992), is hereby posted to Jammu & Kashmir as Special Director General (SDG), Jammu & Kashmir Police with immediate effect and until 30.09.2024.”

About Nalin Prabhat
Born on March 14, 1968, in Thungri village, Manali, Himachal Pradesh, Prabhat holds a BA Honors degree. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Nalin further went to pursue higher studies in MA from St Stephen’s College, Delhi.
A 1992-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Prabhat has extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, notably leading the Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh.
At 55 years old, Prabhat has been serving as the NSG Director General since April 2024. His distinguished career includes several honors, such as three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Padak.
His appointment comes at a crucial time, as Jammu and Kashmir grapple with increasing terrorist activities, including recent attacks on army convoys in Kathua and violent incidents in Doda and Udhampur.
The region has suffered over 20 soldier fatalities and numerous civilian casualties this year. Before his NSG role, Prabhat played a pivotal role in overseeing the Central Reserve Police Force’s operations in Jammu and Kashmir as its Special DG and Additional Director General.
He also served as Deputy Inspector General for the Kashmir and South Kashmir sectors in previous assignments. Nothing is known about his family or wife though.
