Ashok Veeraraghavan bio
Ashok Veeraraghavan is an Indian-origin scientist and a recipient of the Texas Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award. Although Veeraraghavan currently works as a professor at Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering, where he teaches electrical and computer engineering, he is originally from Chennai and spent most of his early years there.
Ashok obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, from 1998–2002. He then obtained his Master of Science (M.S.) in the same field from the University of Maryland. Following which, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2008. After working in several roles, he joined Rice University as an assistant professor in July 2011, and has since worked his way up to become a professor.

Ashok Veeraraghavan wins the 2024 Texas Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award
Following the official announcement about Ashok Veeraraghavan winning the 024 Texas Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award, he shared a statement, saying:
I am delighted to receive this award. It is the recognition of the wonderful and innovative research that many students, postdocs, and research scientists, in the computational imaging lab at Rice University have done over the last decade.”
According to reports, Veeraraghavan’s computational imaging lab conducts comprehensive research on various fields like imaging processes, covering optics, sensor design, and machine learning processing algorithms. The main aim of this research is to address and overcome the imaging challenges that current technologies face. While expressing his delight about receiving the award, he also briefly shared about his work.
According to Veeraraghavan, their research aims to offer imaging for targets that are inaccessible due to the drawbacks of current imaging technologies that cannot get past light scattering in participating media. Following the commendable achievement, Ramamoorthy Ramesh, who is Rice University’s executive vice president for research, praised Veeraraghavan and stated:
I’m so pleased to see Ashok recognised with the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award, joining an accomplished group of prior Rice University recipients of the honour,” Ramesh said.
