The defendant and victim had no prior acquaintance and had gone out with different groups of friends. The CCTV footage, which was shown in court, showed that Vikal carried the victim around 4 a.m., first in his arms and then on his shoulders. As they approached the Blackweir pub, the footage showed the victim leaning heavily on Vikal.
Victim discovers assault and seeks justice
The morning after the assault, the woman found herself in an unfamiliar place. She was bleeding and discovered her clothes neatly folded next to the bed. Upon asking Vikal about what transpired, she was informed that they had engaged in unprotected s*x.
Later that day, Preet Vikal sent a photograph of the victim to a friend, admitting he had “forgotten” to use protection. The victim promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to Vikal’s arrest on the same day. Initially claiming that the woman had consented, Vikal finally admitted to the r*pe on the day of the trial.
Nothing is known about the 20 year old Preet’s parents or family. He is a Hindu by religion.
Defence claims of stellar character rebuffed
The defence, headed by Louise Sweet, painted Vikal as a “real shining star” who had come to the UK from a village north of Delhi on a scholarship, becoming the first person from his family to attend university and study overseas. However, these arguments about his character did not deter the court from delivering the harsh sentence.
Detective Constable Nick Woodland from South Wales Police stated, “In Preet Vikal, we had a dangerous individual who took advantage of an intoxicated and vulnerable young woman.” Also after an “extensive” review of CCTV footage, the police had identified and arrested Vikal. He will now serve two thirds of his sentence in custody and the remainder on licence.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring safety and respect in our societies, holding individuals accountable for their actions regardless of their background or status.
