His Indian Super League debut took place on 25 September 2024, when he came on as a late substitute for Filip Mrzljak in a home fixture against Hyderabad FC, which saw Punjab secure a 2–0 victory. On 6 March 2025, Shami went on to score his maiden goal for the club in an away match—ironically against the same Hyderabad FC team he had debuted against. After receiving a pass from Petros Giakoumakis outside the penalty area, he calmly slotted the ball into the net with his left foot.
Notably, this goal earned him the distinction of becoming the youngest goal-scorer in ISL history at just 17 years and 322 days old. His goal proved to be Punjab’s third of the evening, as they concluded the match with a 3–1 victory. Shami’s growing influence on the field earned him a spot in the Indian U19 men’s football team and marked his international debut with a goal during India’s emphatic 8–0 triumph over the Sri Lanka under-20 team.
