Indian Coast Guard Director General Rakesh Pal passed away on Sunday following a heart attack at a government hospital in Chennai. Earlier that day, Pal, who was scheduled to attend an ICG event with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, was admitted to the state-run Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital (RGGH) after experiencing discomfort.

Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh, who was attending a Tamil Nadu government event for the release of a commemorative coin celebrating the birth centenary of the late DMK President Karunanidhi, promptly rushed to the hospital upon hearing of Pal’s demise to pay his respects. Arrangements are underway to bring Pal’s mortal remains to Delhi.
Who is Rakesh Pal?
After completing his schooling, age 58 Rakesh Pal attended the Indian Naval Academy and joined the Indian Coast Guard in January 1989. Specializing in Gunnery & Weapons Systems, he trained at the Indian Navy’s gunnery school, INS Dronacharya, in Kochi. Pal held the distinction of being the first Gunner of the Indian Coast Guard and later completed an Electro-Optics Fire Control Solution course in the United Kingdom.

Pal was an alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy and was the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
Pal’s command assignments included the Interceptor Boat ICGS C-03, the Inshore Patrol Vessel ICGS Ahalyabai, and the Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Sucheta Kriplani. He also commanded the Vishwast-class Offshore Patrol Vessel ICGS Vijit and the lead ship of the advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels, ICGS Samarth. Additionally, he led two forward-area Coast Guard bases in Gujarat: Coast Guard Station Okha and Coast Guard Station Vadinar.
In his staff appointments, Pal has served as the Director and as the Principal Director at Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi. Upon his promotion to Flag rank, he was appointed Commander of Coast Guard Region (North West) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. In February 2022, he was promoted to three-star rank and appointed Additional Director General Coast Guard (ADGICG). By February 2023, he was given the additional charge of Director General.
