‘Amaran’
‘Amaran’ is a new movie that released this Diwali on October 31, 2024, and stars Sivakarthikeyan and Pallavi. The movie, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, tells the love story of late Major Mukund Varadharajan (Sivakarthikeyan) and Indhu (Pallavi). The movie serves to honour Major Mukund Varadharajan’s selfless sacrifice through his wife Indhu Rebecca Varghese’s spirit. The movie was produced by Kamal Haasan, R. Mahendran, and Sony Pictures International Productions. Meanwhile, Stefan Ritcher and director Rajkumar Periasamy wrote the screenplay for ‘Amaran’. Notably, the movie ‘Amaran’ draws inspiration from Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh’s book ‘India’s Most Fearless’.
Major Mukund Varadharajan bio
Late Major Mukund Varadharajan was an Indian army officer who served in the Rajput Regiment. Prior to joining the Rajput Regiment as a Lieutenant in 2006, Varadharajan graduated from the Officers Training Academy. Just two years later, in 2008, he became a captain and served with the United Nations Mission in Lebanon. He also served briefly at Madhya Pradesh’s Infantry School.
By 2012, he eventually got promoted to the post of Major and led the 44th Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu & Kashmir’s Shopian district. Back in 2014, Mukund led an anti-terror operation that took place in South Kashmir. During the operations, Major Mukund and his team faced intense gunfire, and he successfully neutralised two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists. He also managed to neutralize their commander but sustained several injuries in the process.
Despite his wounds, he managed to successfully complete his mission before collapsing due to blood loss. While Major Mukund Varadharajan succumbed to his injuries, he posthumously received the Ashok Chakra for his bravery during the mission.

Indhu Rebecca Varghese who is now 40 was just 30 years old when her 31 year old husband was martyred while carrying out a counter-terrorism operation. Her daughter Arsheya is now aged 13. Indhu has not remarried despite no objections from her in-laws, and continues her life as a single mother. Indhu is a Christian from Kerala while Mukund was a Tamil Hindu Brahmin.
Indhu and Mukund met while studying at the Madras Christian College and got married on August 28, 2009.
Indhu Rebecca Varghese was the long-time partner and wife of later Major Mukund Varadharajan. The pair were seemingly married for less than five years before Major Mukund’s tragic death from gunshot wounds in 2014. During the time of her death, she was a young mother to a three-year-old child. According to reports, Indhu is currently working as a school teacher in Australia. Over the years, Indhu has showcased her bravery over her husband’s ultimate sacrifice. While receiving the Ashok Chakra in her husband’s stead, she stated the following on national television:
What the country needs to see today is the man he (husband Mukund Varadarajan) was. Not my (a grieving wife’s) sorrow.”
