The death of Sachin Kumar Jain, a 31-year-old Ph.D. student at IIT-Madras, who was discovered dead in his Velachery, Chennai, home on Friday, March 31, had recently attracted widespread notice when it was discovered that he died by suicide.

Before his unexpected death, Sachin had lived with two other people for the previous three months. He and his roommates reportedly left for the institute in the morning, but he arrived home early.

According to reports, just before he passed away, Sachin apologized for not being good enough in a WhatsApp message. Concerned folks went to check on him after viewing his status but discovered that he had passed away.

According to reports, a suicide note was discovered at the scene, and the Velachery police have opened an inquiry into the tragedy. Amid all this, his Ph.D. professor, Ashis Sen, has been heavily criticized and has become the subject of an investigation after Sachin’s family alleged torture.

While expressing its sympathies, IIT-Madras recognized the loss of a remarkable student with an unparalleled record in both academics and research. Director V Kamakoti sent students an email on Thursday morning informing them that Professor Ashis Sen would not be permitted to attend the lab until the inquiry was over. For any emergency, the students are urged to call the HoD.

Who is Ashis Sen?

Ashis Sen is an Indian professor who is currently working for the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras). He has been in the news because he was accused of torturing Ph.D. student Sachin Kumar Jain, who committed suicide recently.

After completing his schooling, he got his B. Tech. from NIT Rourkela. Later, he did postgraduate at IISc Bangalore. He earned his Ph.D. at USC-Columbia and his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Southampton.

To lead innovative research in this field, Dr. Sen founded the first Micro, Nano, and Biofluidics Laboratory at IIT Madras. In addition to publishing more than 120 publications in several high-impact international journals and applying for six patents, he has supervised and mentored 18 Ph.D. and MS researchers.

Dr. Ashis Sen has actively contributed to various academic and administrative responsibilities at the departmental, institute, and national levels. He is also a skilled editor of the Transactions of the Indian National Academy of Engineering publications and an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering.

He is an honorary member of the Indian Society of Heat and Mass Transfer, the Indian Society of Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power, and the Indian Society of Smart Materials and Structures.
