Prominent scholar hailing from Assam, Prof Chandan Mahanta, has passed away, know his cause of death and age

He left us on Tuesday, September 26, at the age of 61. Professor Mahanta took his last breath at his residence within the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Guwahati in Assam.

During his distinguished career, Professor Chandan Mahanta served as the Dean of Student Affairs and as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT-Guwahati.

Unfortunately, for the past two years, he had been battling a brain tumor known as Glioblastoma, which ultimately led to his untimely passing.

Who’s Professor Mahanta?

61 Professor Mahanta made significant contributions to the central government, particularly the Assam government, through his involvement in various water and environment-related infrastructure projects. He was also a valued member of numerous committees, including the Ministry of Power’s committee on the Lower Subansiri Hydropower Project.

His life’s work was dedicated to a deeper understanding of Northeast Indian Hydrology, and he played a pivotal role in guiding numerous students to conduct impactful research, motivating them to work towards the betterment of their communities.

Professor Mahanta held a special place in the hearts of the student community, who continued to show him love and support throughout his battle with illness. His memory will forever be cherished, as he leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, compassion, and unwavering dedication that will inspire generations to come.

His Career as a Professor

According to the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati’s website, Dr. Chandan Mahanta was serving as a Professor and Head in the Civil Engineering Department. He had also been a Professor and former Head at the Centre for the Environment of IIT Guwahati.

In addition, he had held positions on the Board of Governors of NIT Sikkim and NIT Nagaland, and he had been part of various international fellowships and training programs.

Throughout his career, Professor Mahanta conducted numerous projects focused on natural resource management, particularly water resource management, with funding from national and international agencies.

His Published Work 

He authored over 70 technical publications in peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, and books.

His Influence extended beyond borders, as he organized and participated in training programs, workshops, and conferences in various countries, collaborating with universities in the USA and Europe.

One of his notable achievements was a pioneering drinking water project in partnership with UNICEF and PHED Assam, which facilitated significant investments in drinking water projects in Assam under the water quality sub-plan of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

Professor Mahanta also served as an advisor to numerous PhD and master’s students and led a significant project on the Brahmaputra River System, aiming to leverage IT applications for smart management of this dynamic river.
