Nidhi Tewari, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been named Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new private secretary by succeeding Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah.

The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) formally announced the nomination of Nidhi Tewari on Monday after it was approved by the Cabinet’s Appointments Committee. She was employed at the Ministry of External Affairs’ Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division before to joining the PMO. It’s interesting to note that she was an assistant commissioner (business tax) in Varanasi prior to completing the UPSC exam.

Nidhi Tewari is presently employed at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as a Deputy Secretary. Her new post, which is at Level 12 of the pay matrix, will take effect concurrently with her current one or until additional directives are given.

Nidhi Tewari who is a Brahmin Hindu completed her schooling from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and then pursused her undergraduate degree in Political Science from BHU. While her DOB isn’t known, she is aged between 35-45 years.

Nidhi Tewari completed her undergraduate studies in political science at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), a prominent Indian university renowned for its emphasis on the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Tewari will leave her current position to assume new duties in the Prime Minister’s Office in accordance with the March 29 decree. Until further instructions are given, her tenure will continue to be tied to the current administration’s term.

The IFS officer from the 2014 batch hails from the Mahmoorganj neighborhood of Varanasi, which has been PM Modi’s Lok Sabha seat since 2014. Prior to entering the Indian Foreign Service, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner in Varanasi after earning the 96th position in the 2013 Civil Services Examination.

IFS Nidhi Tiwari’s husband is Dr. Sushil Jaiswal, who hails from Deoria district and he has obtained MBBS and MD degrees and practices in Varanasi. IAS Nidhi Tiwari got married in 2006 and after marriage, she continued preparing for UPSC.

After joining the PMO as an Under Secretary in 2022, she has been a Deputy Secretary since January 6, 2023. She was employed in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs before to joining the PMO.

She reports to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in the PMO’s ‘Foreign and Security’ department, where her knowledge of foreign relations has proven crucial.

Before cracking UPSC, she worked as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi and prepared for UPSC along with her job and topped the Civil Services Examination, which is considered one of the toughest examinations in the country. During her tenure in the PMO, she has worked on matters related to foreign affairs, nuclear energy and national security and her expertise in international relations, especially the foreign and security vertical, has been very important in the PMO.
