Veteran IAS officer Sujata Saunik was recently appointed on Sunday as the chief secretary of Maharashtra. Saunik became the first woman to attain the role in Maharashtra’s 64-year-old history. Following the appointment, Saunik will now serve in her new role for a year before her eventual retirement in June the next year. Saunik comes in as the successor of Nitin Kareer, who officially retired on Sunday.

Sujata Saunik is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who was born on June 15, 1965. She is from the 1987 batch. Saunik recently got appointed as the first woman chief secretary of Maharashtra.

Education
Sujata Saunik completed her early schooling, as well as her college and university education from Chandigarh. She was a bright student and also won a gold medal for topping Punjab University during her Masters in History.
Career and profession
Prior to her new role, Saunik was serving as the Additional Chief Secretary of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. She has also worked as the Principal Secretary of Public Health and Financial Reform for the state of Maharashtra.
Aside from her experience and roles of serving in the Indian Administrative Service, she has played an active role with the United Nations as well. She has served on deputation to the United Nations on two occasions, including the mission in Kosovo from 2000-2005 ,and the deputation to the UN mission in Cambodia.
Saunik has over three decades of experience in public policy and governance, healthcare, finance, education, disaster management, and peacekeeping at the district, state, federal levels and international level.

Sujata Saunik is married to her husband Manoj Saunik, who is also a former state chief secretary. Manoj previously served as the additional chief secretary for the Maharashtra state home department.
