Praful Desai is an IAS officer from Telangana who cleared the UPSC exams in 2019 after securing AIR 532. He currently serves as an Additional Collector of Karimnagar in Telangana. Desai comes from a farmers’ family and hails from Karnataka’s Belagavi district and is of the EWS category. According to Desai, he reportedly contracted polio in his left leg at the age of five due to which he suffers slight disability.

Praful Desai has reportedly been accused of misusing the Orthopedically Handicapped (OH) quota in his path of clearing the UPSC. Just recently, several pictures of him started circulating on social media, showing him cycling, playing tennis, rafting, and horse riding.

An X user recently shared pictures of Desai along with his rank while writing:

You are Praful Desai, an IAS officer from the 2019 batch with AIR 532 in the EWS and Orthopedically handicapped category. People on Twitter are sharing photos of you cycling, playing tennis, rafting, and horse riding, claiming you’ve fully recovered after rigorous training at LBSNAA.”

Another user stated:

Imagine the plight of deserving candidate who have appeared for the interview and didn’t make it. How he will be feeling seeing these incidents?”

Meanwhile, another user added:

Looks like someone is cycling away from transparency!”

Praful Desai clarifies

Desai rejected all allegations of misusing the disability quota. He clarified that while one his one leg was disabled, it didn’t mean that he couldn’t engage in physical activities. The IAS officer stated that many of these activities were a part of his training program at LBSNAA. The Karimnagar Additional Collector further clarified on the viral picture showing him playing badminton. He stated how he is not a regular but often plays the game a few times with his batchmates. He added:

My disability doesn’t mean I cannot walk at all and I try to play a little with my friends.”
