Nandini Chakraborty career
Nandini Chakraborty, a seasoned 1994-batch IAS officer from the West Bengal cadre has a notable track record in her administrative career.
She started her career as a sub-divisional officer in Malda district.
Her journey took a turn when she was appointed as the principal secretary to former state Governor La Ganesan in August 2022.
This appointment followed the interim charge taken by La Ganesan after Jagdeep Dhankhar, marking a pivotal moment in Chakraborty’s administrative trajectory.
However, Chakraborty’s tenure as principal secretary faced a twist earlier this year when she was removed from the post in February. The decision to remove her reportedly stemmed from her reluctance to clear a proposal for the formation of an advisory committee for the Governor.
The proposed committee included individuals handpicked by Governor CV Ananda Bose, with notable backgrounds including a former IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre and a former IPS officer who had served as the CBI’s special director as well as Delhi Police commissioner.
Despite this earlier shift, Chakraborty’s administrative journey continued, showcasing the fluid nature of bureaucratic roles. Following her removal from the principal secretary post, she was appointed as the state tourism secretary. Now, her trajectory takes another turn with the announcement of her appointment as the new Home Secretary.
The Home Secretary’s role is pivotal in the governance structure, overseeing crucial aspects such as law and order, internal security, and disaster management. Chakraborty’s extensive experience, combined with her past roles in key administrative positions, positions her as a suitable choice for this crucial post.
The announcement was made through a notification issued by the state Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department. The notification not only highlighted Chakraborty’s new role but also mentioned the outgoing Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi’s appointment as the chief adviser (finance) to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
This reshuffling within the administrative setup reflects the state government’s commitment to optimizing its bureaucratic machinery. As Chakraborty steps into the role of Home Secretary, her leadership will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping and implementing policies that impact the safety and security of the state’s residents.
