The suspect identified as Thomas Abreu currently faces charges of one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, as well as six other charges.
NYC scooter shooting spree
The NYC scooter shooting spree took place on Saturday, July 8, 2023, in Brooklyn and Queens. It initially began with Abreu shooting a 21-year-old man, following which he shot Homod Saeidi in the back near 108- 19 Jamaica Avenue in Queens just around seventeen minutes later.
Just minutes after these two incidents, witnesses saw a man on a scooter opening fire into a mob of people at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and 108th Street. Luckily, nobody got wounded. However, at around 11.35 am local time, Abreu shot a 44-year-old man and just minutes later shot a 63-year-old man at Jamaica Avenue.
Following the shootings, police have arrested 25-year-old Thomas Abreu for killing Homod Saeidi and injuring three others. Homod Saeidi, who was the second victim in the shooting was taken to the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. He was later declared dead. According to reports, Saeidi was heading to the mosque to pray before getting shot brutally. Homod Saeidi’s son Ahmed shared:
My heart is broken; my family is all devastated. We can’t believe something like that would happen to an 87-year-old man. It’s terrible.”
Homod Saeidi brief bio and family
According to his son Ahmed, Homod Saeidi is originally from Yemen and had settled in the USA back in 1962 looking for better opportunities. Ahmed stated that Saeidi would regularly go out for a morning run for three to four miles, after which he would go to a local park. Following which, he would head to the mosque to pray. The victim reportedly followed the same exact routine even on Saturday before being shot dead. Homod Saeidi was a father of six children.
According to Ahmed:
He’s a cheerful guy. He liked to joke a lot. He has a lot of friends.”
Ahmed further revealed that the victim and family were expected to visit Yemen for a family trip just next week. Following his death, a funeral took place in Brooklyn on Monday, after which they buried him in Spring Valley, New Jersey.

Homod Saeidi was a business owner who owned several grocery stores. Aside from that he was also involved in the real estate industry.
Footage of the shooting released
Authorities have released some unsettling footage obtained during the shooting that brutally killed Homod Saeidi. The video shows Homod in his blood-soaked shirt and also shows the elderly man falling on his knees. Viewers can see a passerby shortly after running towards him to assist.
NYPD Acting Police Commissioner Edward Caban stated about the incident:
Armed with an image of the suspect as officers fanned out across Queens.”
He further added:
The 9mm pistol had an extended magazine. Given the violence, this individual was willing to carry out, I want to express my gratitude to the men and women in the NYPD. This guy had a lot of ammunition on him. There were going to be other bodies dropped.”
Upon further investigations into Thomas Abreu’s background, law enforcement officials discovered that Abreu has previously been arrested once back in 2019. Police had previously arrested him on charges of possession of a forged instrument.
