A Radical preacher Amritpal Singh’s uncle ‘Harjit Singh has been brought to Assam by the police of Punjab on Tuesday morning,’ a senior official said.

Harjit Singh who was shifted to Dibrugarh jail by road from Guwahati is the fifth person who is linked to Amritpal’s ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) to be brought to Northeastern state.

He was taken from Guwahati to Dibrugarh central jail with seven security vehicles. He was lodged around 7.10 am.

Who is Harjit Singh?

According to police sources, Harjit Singh, Amritpal’s uncle, was involved in the transport business in the UK and Canada, but joined his nephew after he came to India in August last year and played the role of manager and was also in charge of Amritpal’s finances, it is learnt.

Harjit Singh helped his nephew with controls over the accounts of WPD. He among five people have been slapped with the National Security Act, which helps to allow the preventive detention of anyone who could threaten the national security or public order.

The Mercedes, in which pro-Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh escaped on Saturday, was registered in the name of drug smuggler’s brother Ravel Singh from Khemkaran, Tarn Taran.

Harjit was hiding in the house of sarpanch of Uddowal village Manpreet Singh and the sarpanch said Harjit had taken shelter at gunpoint and kept calling mediapersons informing them about the surrender.

Ravel had gifted the car to Amritpal and it was the same car in which he was seen waving to the crowds through the sunroof till a few days back. Ravel is the brother of Kuldeep Singh Bhura, a nihang who was killed by the BSF in 2013 for smuggling drugs and weapons from Pakistan.

On Sunday, a total of four WPD members were brought to Dibrugarh central jail after the Punjab government on Saturday started a major crackdown on outfit, which has been headed by the Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal, who is wanted in several more criminal cases.

Heavy security is deployed on the Mohanbari airport which is in Dibrugarh, fuelling speculation that more WPD members could be brought to the BJP-ruled state from Punjab, around 2,500 km away.

Harjit Singh with his driver Harpreet Singh has surrendered to the police near Bullandpur gurdwara at Jalandhar’s Mehatpur area. Punjab’s deputy Inspector General of Police, Narinder Bhargav was among officers present on the spot.

In video shot then, Harjit has been producing his licensed 32-bore pistol and cash of Rs 1-1.25 lakh that he was carrying in his Mercedes. His car was later on seized.

The Assam state Inspector General of Police, Prashanta Bhuyan reviewed security arrangements in the city of Dibrugarh on Monday. Bhuyan refused to share the details by saying “These are sensitive matters related to the internal security of the state.”

Who Is Amritpal?

Amritpal Singh is 30 years old and he is a radical, Indian Khalistan separatist, who is a self-styled Sikh preacher and leader of the organization Waris Panjab De from Punjab, India.

Investigation suggests that Amritpal was forming an armed unit called Anandpur Khalsa Fauj and the police have recovered bullet-proof vests having “AKF” inscribed on these.
