The recently selected prime minister of Sri Lanka, Harini Amarasuriya, has a special bond with India because she attended Delhi University for her undergraduate studies from 1991-1994.

The 54-year-old former scholar Harini Amarasuriya who is now a politician was sworn in as the 16th prime minister of Sri Lanka on Tuesday. She attended the esteemed Hindu College in the early 1990s.

54-year-old Harini Amarasuriya was born on 6 March 1970 and is the daughter of a homemaker mother and a tea plantation father. She is the first one to enter politics from her family.

She comes from a middle-class family and grew up on the tea estate in the south of the country. She has two older siblings and was born many years after them before moving to Colombo with the government taking over the tea plantations.

Sh went to an Anglican private girls school in Colombo. She is unmarried and doesn’t have any children.

Harini Amarasuriya graduated from Hindu College with a B.A. (Hons) in Sociology, Macquarie University with an M.A. in Applied Anthropology and Development, and the University of Edinburgh with a PhD in Social Anthropology.


In addition, she has written books and done research on a variety of topics, including globalization, development, gender, dissent, activism, youth, politics, and state-society interactions. She worked for a number of years as a psychosocial and child protection practitioner before becoming a senior lecturer in sociology at the Open University of Sri Lanka.

In addition, she joined demonstrations calling for free education and joined the Federation of University Teachers’ Association. She has fought for rights for LGBTQ+ people, gender equality, and is a member of the Parliamentary Caucus for Animal Welfare.

Harini Amarasuriya career

Harini Amarasuriya supported NPP Candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake during the 2019 Sri Lankan presidential election by joining the National Intellectuals Organization. After the 2020 Sri Lankan parliamentary election, she was selected and nominated by the JJB as the national list candidate to join the 16th Parliament of Sri Lanka on August 12, 2020.

After being selected as a national list candidate, questions were raised over her ability to continue serving as an academic senior lecturer at the Open University. She did, however, formally disclose in an interview with media that she had left her role as a senior lecturer at the Open University in order to focus on her political career and become an MP.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake swore in Amarasuriya as Sri Lanka’s sixteenth prime minister on September 24, 2024. She is her party’s first prime minister and the third woman to occupy the position, following Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga. She was named concurrent minister of justice, health, women’s affairs, trade, and industries in addition to her position as premier.
