Authorities in Brampton, Canada, have suspended a Peel Police officer named Harinder Sohi after video footage showed him protesting outside a Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton on Sunday

Harinder Sohi caught attending a protest

Authorities in Brampton Canada have suspended a Canadian Peel police officer named Harinder Sohi after video footage emerged of him taking part in a protest against a group of devotees outside a Hindu temple. According to reports, Sergrant Harinder is a Peel Regional Police officer and has served on the force for 18 years.

The video showed Harinder holding a Khalistan flag and chanting anti-India slogans alongside others. Following the suspension, Sergeant Sohi reportedly received all kinds of death threats on social media. As a result of which the Peel Regional Police Association had to offer “assistance and protection.” As of now, Sohi does not face any allegations of wrongdoing.

Peel Regional Police speaks out

Richard Chin, who is the spokesperson for the Peel Regional Police stated on behalf of the department:

We are aware of a video circulating on social media which shows an off-duty Peel police officer involved in a demonstration. This officer has since been suspended in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act.”

Chin further added:

We are investigating the circumstances in totality depicted in the video and are unable to provide further information until such time that this investigation is complete.”

The Peel Regional Police also shared a post on X stating:

Officers will be deployed to ensure peace & lawfulness at planned demonstrations. Violence & other criminal acts has no place in our community.”

The Peel Regional Police also stated on Monday that they made several arrests in connection to the protests that took place in Brampton and Mississauga, Ontario. Notably, authorities have arrested four people, including 43-year-old Dilpreet Singh Bouns, 23-year-old Vikas, and 31-year-old Amritpal Singh.

Condemnations against the attack

Following the brutal incident, the Indian High Commission in Canada has come out in condemnation, citing ‘anti-India’ elements. The high commission also stated that the local authorities will organise any further events “contingent on security arrangements”.

Meanwhile, the Hindu Canadian Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation working for the Hindu community in Canada also spoke out. The organization shared a video of the attack on the temple, stating that the Khalistani terrorists even attacked kids and women as well. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also come out to condemn the recent attack on the Hindu temple in Canada. The PM about the issue on Monday on X, stating:

I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.”
