White House correspondent Hariana Veras drew widespread attention following her appearance at a historic peace agreement signing between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The event, held in the Oval Office, was also marked by US President Donald Trump’s off-script remarks praising both her words and appearance. Veras, originally from the DRC, had been invited to the ceremony by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

During her address, she shared a message of optimism, saying, “I saw hope. They have hope now for a better day in Congo,” referring to sentiments among Congolese citizens. She also conveyed that DRC President Félix Tshisekedi had expressed an intention to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. President Trump responded warmly, calling her remarks “beautifully stated.”

He went on to add, “You are beautiful—and beautiful inside,” before joking that such a compliment could jeopardize his political future. “I wish I had more reporters like you,” he added, drawing both praise and criticism for the improvised interaction. The light-hearted moment unfolded during the signing of the Washington Accord, a US-brokered peace deal intended to end decades of violent conflict in eastern Congo.

The agreement, besides its humanitarian implications, also grants the United States access to DRC’s rich mineral reserves, including copper, lithium, and gold. President Trump described the accord as a “glorious triumph for peace” and indicated that the US would continue to exert pressure on both sides to uphold the terms. He framed the event as part of broader efforts to mediate global disputes, crediting his administration for facilitating breakthroughs between other nations as well, including India-Pakistan.
