I might have one of the least popular takes on Syed:
a. He 100% killed Hae Min Lee
b. His conviction was unjust — the prosecution did not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt
c. My alma mater Georgetown hired him regardless, purely to virtue signal pic.twitter.com/gn3qMMnlQi— Steve Cortes (@CortesSteve) March 28, 2023

Eventually, the circuit court judge reversed Syed’s conviction, citing weaknesses in the prosecution’s evidence, and he was subsequently freed from jail. However, the Maryland appellate court panel has now ordered a new hearing, saying that the lower court violated the victim’s family’s right to attend a critical hearing in the case.
Due to this, Hae Min Lee and her murder have again become a hot topic of discussion, with many people trying to find out more about them. So, here’s what we know about them:
Who is Hae Min Lee?
Hae Min Lee was an American student of South Korean origin who was murdered in 1999. She has been in the news because the Maryland appeals court reinstated her alleged murderer’s murder conviction.
In 1980, she was born in South Korea. Then, in 1992, she moved to the United States to live with her grandparents. Her mother’s name is Youn Kim. She also has a brother named Young Lee.
After coming to the USA, Hae Min Lee attended the magnet program at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, Maryland. She was also an athlete who participated in field hockey and lacrosse.
She was declared dead on February 9, 1999, when her body was found. At that time, she was 18 years old.
What happened to her?
In Baltimore County, Maryland, Hae Min Lee was last spotted alive on January 13, 1999. Four weeks later, her corpse was discovered in Leakin Park. As per her autopsy report, she had been manually strangled to death.
Subsequently, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Masud Syed, was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with an additional 30 years.
The case was featured by the well-known podcast “Serial” in 2014, reviving interest in the inquiry. Eventually, Judge Martin P. Welch quashed Syed’s conviction in 2016 and mandated a new trial. However, in 2019, the Maryland Court of Appeals overturned the ruling.
Afterward, further evidence was uncovered during a prosecutor’s probe, which resulted in Syed’s conviction being overturned in September 2022. Eventually, he was freed from jail after 22 years.
However, a recent decision by the appellate court has overturned the previous order that vacated Syed’s conviction, effectively restoring his guilty verdict in the murder of Hae Min Lee. The court cited a violation of Lee’s family’s right to attend a crucial hearing in the case as the reason for the reinstatement.
