Despite all the allegations, Kebatu has denied all charges and now awaits trial, with case drawing significant attention across Essex.
Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu accused of trying to kiss 14-year-old
Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu is an Ethiopian immigrant who was recently accused of trying to kiss a 14-year-old girl on two occasions. The incident first took place on July 7, when Kebatu reportedly approached a group of children eating pizza and tried to kiss a 14-year-old girl. He then allegedly asked the same girl to kiss another child in the group. The following day, on July 8, he approached the same girl again and attempted to kiss her while placing his hand on her thigh and brushing her hair.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident on the same day, Kebatu also allegedly tried to kiss a woman while touching her leg and telling her that she was “pretty.” Police have since assured continued visible presence in Epping in order to maintain community safety as the incident sparked widespread protests.
Charges and allegations
Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu recently appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court and pled not guilty to three counts of s*xual assault, one count of inciting a girl to engage in s*xual activity, and one count of harassment without violence. He was remanded into custody by District Judge Christopher Williams and his two-day trial is scheduled for August 26 and 27.
Amidst the hearing, tensions escalated when protests erupted outside the Bell Hotel in Epping. While no offenses occurred at the protest itself, two male security guards were seriously assaulted, and police are treating the attack as racially aggravated.

Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu is a 38-year-old resident of High Road, Epping who originally hails from Ethiopia. Following the charges leveled against him, he appeared in court wearing a grey t-shirt while speaking through an interpreter to confirm his identity and address. Kebatu currently remains in custody while the legal process continues. Aside from that, there is little to no information available about him publicly.

Following the recent incident, Superintendent Tim Tubbs emphasized the importance of allowing the judicial process to unfold without interference, stating:
We know there is significant discussion about this ongoing case within the community and indeed further afield… but public discussion must not hinder an ongoing prosecution.”
