The chess prodigy from Chennai, who is competing in the FIDE Chess World Cup 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan, surpassed Viswanathan Anand to take the top spot in the live ratings for India.
The youngster is seen as a deserving successor to Anand, who has held the title of top chess player in India according to public classical charts from FIDE since July 1986. On Thursday, Gukesh became the lone player in 2016 to surpass Anand and take the top spot in live ratings in India, surpassing Pentala Harikrishna.
Who Is Gukesh Dommaraju?
Gukesh Dommaraju was born in May 2006 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He began playing at the age of seven. Rajnikanth, Gukesh’s father, is an ENT surgeon, and Padma, his mother, is a microbiologist. He is currently studying at Chennai’s Velammal Vidyalaya in Mel Ayanambakkam.
In 2022, at the age of 16, he defeated former world champion, Magnus Carlsen, breaking the record for the youngest player ever. Additionally, he is the third-youngest grandmaster to receive the FIDE title in 2019

Gukesh has always been quite vocal about his dream to win the World Champion title and the IQ score of this 21-year-old from Tamil Nadu is 225, the highest in India.
Gukesh Dommaraju’s Chess Career
The Chennai prodigy won the U-9 category of the Asian School Chess Championship in 2015. He also won the U-12 solo fast and blitz, U-12 team rapid and blitz, and U-12 individual classical categories of the World Youth Chess Championships in 2018.
Gukesh views Viswanathan Anand as his mentor. In July, at the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia chess competition, he had the chance to play against his chess hero.
Even though there was no winner in the game, Anand was pleased by the kid’s dedication and strategy.
Anand remarked in a statement, “Not frequently have I sat across from him. But I got to see a little bit of a newer side of him in Zagreb when we played against each other. I realised that he was merely attempting to concentrate before the game. He might have done this in the past (against different competitors), but it stood out to me because it was the first time I faced him in a contest.”
On Thursday, Gukesh defeated Misratdin Iskandarov of Azerbaijan 2-0 to go to the 2023 FIDE World Cup third round.
