Grzegorz Gajewski was chess GM Gukesh D’s second at the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024
The key forces behind Indian teenage chess sensation Gukesh Dammaraju’s incredible accomplishment of capturing the World Chess title in Singapore were renowned sports psychologist Paddy Upton and his trainer, Polish grandmaster Grzegorz Gajewski.
On Thursday, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made history by becoming just the second GM from his nation to win the World Chess Championship title. At just eighteen, he became the youngest-ever world chess champion by defeating China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5. Viswanathan Anand, who won the World Chess Championship five times before Gukesh, was the only other Indian to do so.

Gukesh had been supported throughout the competition by a strong supporting group. The teenager from Chennai announced his team during the press conference on Thursday after the game. Viswanathan Anand, Grzegorz Gajewski, Vincent Keymer, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Pentala Harikrishna, and mental training coach Paddy Upton were among his team members.
Gukesh is mentored by the Anand Chess academy and Gajewski is one of the coaches there and is now helping Gukesh as his second and has been Gukesh’s trainer for three years now with Gukesh defeating him back in 2019.
39-year-old Grzegorz Gajewski was born on 19 July, 1985 and was awarded the title of grandmaster back in 2005.
Grzegorz Gajewski is a Polish grandmaster and the 2015 Polish national champion and at one time a top-100 player in the world, Gajewski seconded GM Viswanathan Anand when he took on Magnus Carlsen at the 2014 World Championship. He was also a second to GM Gukesh Dommaraju, the 2024 world championship winner.

Grzegorz Gajewski career
Gajewski Gajewski took home the Cappelle-la-Grande Open title in 2011. After all players achieved eight points from ten games, he defeated Aleksandr Rakhmanov, Emilio Cordova, Kevin Spraggett, and Samuel Shankland on tiebreak to win the 14th Open International de Sants, Hostafrancs i La Bordeta in Barcelona in 2012.
In 2015, Gajewski emerged victorious in the Polish Chess Championship. Gajewski represented Poland in the 2008 Dresden Chess Olympiads, where he finished on the fourth board with 6½ points from 10 games, and the 2014 Tromsø Olympiads.
In addition, he participated in the European Team Chess Championship in 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2015; in 2007, Gajewski took home the silver medal for himself on board three.

Gajewski Gajewski has served as Viswanathan Anand’s second in a number of events after finishing second in the 2014 World Chess Championship in Sochi, Russia.
He has been training with some of India’s most talented chess players at Westbridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) since the epidemic. He has been Gukesh Dommaraju’s second since 2023, helping him win the 2024 Candidates Tournament and becoming Gukesh the youngest contender in World Chess Championship history.
When Gukesh defeated Ding Liren to win the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship, he was also his primary trainer.
