The historical drama is the first film of The Fresh Prince since he slapped Chris Rock during the Academy Awards 2022.

However, let us remind you, the film is based on a person who went on to become a symbolic figure in the history of the abolitionist movement in the United States.

In the Antoine Fuqua directed movie, the Grammy award winner will be seen in the role of Gordon, who’s widely known as Whipped Peter.

For those who are unversed, let us tell you, Harper’s Weekly posted a picture of Gordon in an earlier reports, where he can be seen showing his scars from whippings which he had received while serving as a slave.

Soon enough it managed to became the symbol of human rights abuse which were being unleashed upon slaves. It also served as the catalyst for African-Americans to join the Union Army during the Civil War.

Who was Gordon aka Whipped Peter?

For those who are unfamiliar with Gordon, let us tell you, he was a slave at the plantation, which was owned by John Bridget Lyons in Louisiana.

In the census of 1860, Gordon was shows amongst the 49 other individuals who were showcased as the slaves of plantation.

He managed to escape from the plantation in 1863 while carrying onions in his pockets. As per reports, he used onion to rub his skin to fend off the bloodhounds which were sent to track him down.

In a total of his 10 days journey, Gordon crossed a distance of 40 miles to reach Baton Rouge.

During his examination at the camp, he revealed he was whipped by an overseer of the plantation, Artayou Carrier. Following the incident, he was bedridden for 2 months.

He was enlisted into the Union Army as a guide and was the first ever black man to lead American soldiers during an assault.

Coming back to Emancipation, apart from Will Smith, the historical drama also features Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Steven Ogg, Mustafa Shakir, Timothy Hutton, among many more.
