On Wednesday, the Greater Chennai Police reportedly arrested a biryani vendor on charges of s*xually assaulting a student from Anna University.

The accused, identified as 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, is said to operate a biryani stall on the pavement. According to the victim’s statement, she alleged that an unidentified individual had assaulted her on December 23, 2024, around 8 PM, while she was conversing with a male friend behind a campus building.

Allegedly, the assailant  committed the crime after intimidating the victim’s friend. Following her complaint to the Kotturpuram All Women’s Police Station, a case was registered, four special teams were formed, and investigations commenced, as confirmed by the Greater Chennai City Police. Officials stated that scientific evidence led to Gnanasekaran’s arrest.

The accused, 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, is a roadside biriyani vendor from Kotturpuram and Kotturpuram police station had filed a case under BNSS section 64 and is continuing investigations.

“A student from Guindy Engineering College has filed a complaint of *exual assault. The police are investigating. Appropriate decisions will be taken at the university level to ensure that such an incident does not recur,” Tamil Nadu’s higher education minister Govi said in a post on X.

Recently, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime, with police also investigating his possible involvement in other offenses. Collaboration with the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has been initiated, and authorities noted that CCTV cameras and security personnel have been deployed on campus. Police assured that measures to enhance campus safety would be discussed with university officials, including a joint security review.

Anna University’s Registrar, J Prakash, conveyed the institution’s commitment to fully cooperating with the investigation, while noting that the ICC had initiated its own inquiry into the matter. Simultaneously, protests were organized by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), with demonstrators calling for stringent action. They alleged that the assault involved two outsiders and took place within the campus premises.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami reportedly expressed shock over the incident, describing it as shameful. Additionally, he urged the authorities to ensure that the culprits faced severe punishment. In response, Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan refuted the opposition’s claims, asserting that prompt action was underway and that additional measures to prevent such incidents on campus would be implemented.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai and PMK founder leader S Ramadoss also voiced criticism of the government, raising concerns about campus security and the effectiveness of CCTV systems at the time of the incident. Both leaders emphasized the need for accountability while pointing to broader issues regarding the state’s law and order situation.
