Renowned Italian rally driver Giulia Maroni passed away around the evening of January 28.

Cause of death

Giulia Maroni passed away after succumbing to her injuries at Maggiore Hospital in Bologna. Maroni injured herself after she fell from a height of 164 feet while out on a hike. The Italian driver was reportedly out walking her dog with her partner on Mount Libro Aperto in the Pizzo dei Sassi Bianchi area on Sunday when she fell.

Following her fall, her partner called emergency services, who then arrived and made attempts to treat her at the scene. However, seeing that she needed more help, she airlifted her to the Maggiore hospital in Bologna. According to reports, Maroni lost her balance and slipped into the gully before falling among trees and rocks. Maroni eventually died from her injuries at the hospital.

According to mountain rescue station chief Nicolas Barattini:

We saw immediately that the woman’s condition was unfortunately very serious. It was a tragic fatality, the woman placed her foot badly and slipped.”

Giulia Maroni was an Italian professional rally champion who was quite reputable in the off-road world. She was born in the province of Ravenna, Faenza, and she was a resident of Castel Guelfo for many years. Besides being an animal lover, Maroni was also an avid biker and adventure enthusiast.

Giulia Maroni gained prominence as a rally driver when she won the extreme all-female “Shemud” race in Malaysia, back in 2016. She also participated in the Dakar rally as a co-driver and navigator alongside Luciano Carcheri. The pair represented the Angelo Caffi Corse team. She most notably won the 2021 Italian Cross-Country Rally. Maroni also served as the president of the Castel San Pietro Terme club in Bologna, an A-Team 4×4 off-road club. She served in the role for many years and took part in the most important off-road races with them.

Following her tragic death, fans and friends came out to pay their tributes and condolences to Giulia Maroni. The 4X4 Magazine, where Maroni worked as a correspondent and photographer, shared:

The week starts with very bad news. An accident in the mountains took away Giulia Maroni, a passionate sportsman and off-roader, who had also collaborated with our magazine. Rip Giulia.”

Meanwhile, Lina Van De Mars, a fellow rally racer who finished runner-up alongside Maroni in the FIA European Cup also paid her tribute stating:

“We were just making new plans for the 2024 season,” she wrote, as reported by The Chequered Red Flag. It’s been an honour to know you. It’s been (a) pleasure to race with you. Still proud of us having become European vice champions in the world of baja and rallyraid racing. I am still in shock. Hoping smiles and sunshine will be with you.”
