Gerardo has previously managed Messi twice throughout his career and reports suggest that his arrival also played a hand in convincing Messi to sign with the club.
Inter Miami to appoint Gerardo Martino as head coach for Messi and co
According to various reports, Argentine coach Gerardo Martino is set to join Inter Miami as the club’s new head coach.
Martino and Messi have previously worked together twice with their first collaboration coming at Barcelona in the 2013/14 season. The Argentine international became the first ever Barcelona coach to go unbeaten in his first 16 games in charge. However, the club failed to win the Spanish league title and got eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals as well. As such, Martino left his post after managing the club for just one season.
The two teams then worked together at the Argentina national team, where Martino took charge from 2014-2016. Martino and Messi led Argentina to the final of the 2015 Copa America, and the 2016 Copa America Centenario. Martino eventually resigned after the latter.

He was born to parents Mabel Capiglioni and Gerardo Martino in Rosario, Argentina. Before becoming a coach, Martino played mostly for Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina itself. He currently still holds the record of most appearances with the team. Martino played 505 matches with the club across all official competitions.

Inter Miami lets go of former head coach Phil Neville
Inter Miami have let go of former head coach Phil Neville on June 1 following the club’s disappointing results of finishing last in the Eastern Conference with just 15 points in 15 matches. Following the decision, club owner David Beckham stated:
Sometimes in this game we have to make the toughest decisions and sadly we feel the time is right to make a change.”
Beckham and Neville formerly played together as teammates back at Manchester United and currently co-own English club Salford City. Neville joined Inter Miami in 2021 and led the club to a playoff position last season. The club finished in sixth place in the Eastern Conference in 2022, and made the playoff cut by two points.
