Gerardo Estrada killed in LAPD crash
The fatal crash involving the LAPD cruiser and Estrada took place on September 19 at around 7:15 p.m. near Figueroa Street and Piedmont Avenue. Estrada was reportedly heading home after work, riding his skateboard southbound along the center median, when a marked LAPD patrol car struck him at high speed. The unit was responding to a felony warrant call and ended Estrada’s life within just seconds of the crash. The dashcam footage of the incident is now publicly available and has sparked widespread outrage, grief, and demands for accountability.
According to reports, officers had all lights and sirens activated, but the force of impact threw Estrada across the street. As a result, Estrada was left pinned under a parked vehicle, and first responders attempted all kinds of life-saving measures. However, Estrada died at the scene, and LAPD officials have since claimed that the cruiser was not “driving excessively fast.” Witnesses, however, claimed that the collision sounded like a violent, high-speed crash.
